By Thomas Miles

Many in the racing community are still “chocked up” after Speedway Australia announced its latest inductees into its Hall of Fame.

Ahead of the Australia Speedway Awards Gala Dinner at the RACV Level 17 Ballroom in Melbourne on June 1, the Hall of Fame class of the 2024 were revealed in separate videos across social media.

Renowned promoter David Lander was the first to be revealed during a “morning tea” at Lismore.

Lander was caught by surprise when Speedway Australia CEO Darren Tindal greeted him to share the news.

Lander’s promotional career spanned for three decades, including 15 seasons running Lismore Speedway, the longest run at the venue.

Next on the list was legendary Speedcar and Sprintcar dual champion Phil March.

March won a record four South Australian Speedcar Championships  81/82, 83/84, 84/85, 85/86, while the journeyman took part in the first 29 World Series Sprintcars seasons from 87/88 all the way to 15/16.

He was setup for an interview in his workshop to discuss next year’s national Sprintcar Championship at Murray Bridge before it was gatecrashed by Tindal.

West Australian Speedcar Ace Neville Lance was was similarly taken by surprise at his workshop in Perth.

This was the first “Facebook live” announcement and attracting 728 likes and 18,000 views to celebrate the 2013 Australian Speedcar champion.

Ipswich based team owner and parts supplier Ian Boettcher was left bewildered after one his staff stormed his office during a family meeting and revealed the news.

The most emotional announcement was made on behalf of West Aussie solo motorcycle trailblazer, Chum Taylor.

Taylor won the WA title five times between 1958-1970, while he was the national champion in 1966.

He represented the Australia National Speedway Team on 28 occasions and even collected the single cap for Great Britain.

The Hall of Fame announcement was made via an online video call to his 97-year-old son Glyn in Greater Manchester in the UK, drawing tears for a legend who now battles advanced dementia.

They will be officially celebrated at the Australia Speedway Awards Gala Dinner at the RACV Level 17 Ballroom in Melbourne on June 1.
