Waters shows speed in NASCAR debut

By Thomas Miles

Stateside Supercars star Cameron Waters will line up from 22nd on the grid for his rookie NASCAR Truck Series race at Martinsville today.

Waters recorded a 19.762 in his one and only qualifying lap around the historic, but tight half mile “Paperclip”.

The Aussie even led the first seven minutes of the session before drifting back as his more experienced rivals found more time later in the session, but he still went faster than 12 others.

The ThorSport #66 TRADIE backed Ford ended up outside the top 20, 0.345s away from pole sitter and teammate Ty Majeski.

For reference Shane van Gisbergen and Marcos Ambrose qualified 28th and 20th for their respective NASCAR Truck Series debuts at Indianapolis 2023 and Martinsville 2006.

There was little time for Waters to get used to life behind the wheel of the truck, with just one half hour practice session taking place immediately prior to qualifying.

He showed impressive adaptability in that session, finishing 11th, just 0.194s off the lead as the third highest Ford in his debut session.

Come qualifying Waters was the third driver to attack the half mile and the Supercars star stole the show initially.

Waters’ 19.762s time good enough to put the Aussie on top of the timesheets by 0.089s over Matt Mills.

After seven minutes had elapsed, Mills was the only car within two tenths of Waters.

It was not until after 10 minutes of running the #66 TRADIE ThorSport Racing entry was knocked off the top from Layne Riggs.

Riggs fired a 19.502s lap, 0.26s clear of Waters, who slipped to 15th as many started to find more time with later runs.

However, Waters was still the third fastest Ford at the 30-minute mark where less than a tenth covered the top six.

Once all drivers the completed their laps, Waters ended up 22nd on the grid in the 34-car field.

The 2024 Long Johns Silvers 250 is scheduled to begin at 10.30 AEDT and will be broadcast on Fox Sports 506 or Kayo.
