Extra twilight racing in Sydney

Mostert Sydney 2023

By Thomas Miles

Fans will enjoy a double dose of Supercars racing under lights at this year’s Sydney SuperNight event in July.

In 2022 and 2023, only the first of the two races have been night affairs with the second held on Sunday afternoon.

But in 2024 the Sunday race has been pushed back to finish under lights as well and showcase an extra bout of twilight racing.

Despite the tweak being announced, the schedule for the weekend is yet to be confirmed.

However, the formats are locked in with a 90 minute practice session kicking things off on Friday.

Then on qualifying and a top 10 shootout will take place prior to the opening 132km race which will be held under the Saturday night lights.

The format will be mirrored on Sunday with a slightly earlier start but also being a twilight race.

Supercars Head of Television Nathan Prendergast said the change will enhance the spectacle.

“Night racing at Sydney Motorsport Park has become one of the highlights of the year, for fans and for viewers watching at home from around the globe,” he said.

“We believe this decision improves the overall quality of the on-track show and will bring fans fireworks at Sydney Motorsport Park as the winners cross the finish line in both races.”

In addition to Supercars card: the Porsche Carrera Cup, Toyota Gazoo Racing 86 Series, V8 SuperUtes, Touring Car Masters and Sports Sedans will be support categories.

It will also be a big cause for celebration Matt Stone Racing as the team raises the bat for 200 race starts while Nick Percat brings up his 150th round start.

The 2024 Sydney SuperNight will take place from July 19-21.
