Boys cruises to maiden Trans Am win

Boys

By Thomas Miles

In just his second Trans Am round, Jordan Boys is already a winner and achieved the feat convincingly in the AWC Race Tasmania opener.

Boys converted pole into a big win after overcoming an early challenge from the Nathan Herne, whose comeback that had looked so promising was hit by a puncture.

Although Herne beat him off the line, the Racing Academy driver hit back to wrestle back the lead at the hairpin.

The move was well timed arriving just before an early safety car caused by Josh Webster and Josh Thomas tangling at the hairpin and the grass fire that followed.

Herne sat second before he suddenly dived into the pits during the stoppage.

“Something is loose in the rear, maybe a flat tyre,” Herne said as his crew went to work.

He was sent out back in 18th and tried to produce the quickest out lap in history but was unable to catch the pack.

Boys led the restart as Elliott Cleary and Elliott Barbour wrestled hard for second and the young gun won out with a big braking move at the end of the back straight.

Despite Cleary’s pace, Boys was a second and a half up the road within a few laps as the pack settled down.

But nothing was tame about the fight for 11th as Eden Thornburrow and Nash Morris three changes of position on seven corners.

But the GRM youngster was able to keep the second generation racer at bay and soon went more than 2s ahead.

Up front it was no contest as Boys opened up a 4s advantage to ensure he cruised to the chequered flag.

Boys finished 3.6s ahead of the impressive Cleary, who held off Barbour, while Todd Hazelwood rose up four positions to snare fourth ahead of James Golding and James Moffat as Herne had to settle for 15th.

The second Trans Am race is at 14.05 AEDT.
