More shootouts in 2024 Supercars season

By Thomas Miles

Supercars has revealed the race formats for the 2024 season and more racing kilometres and shootouts have been promised.

Despite only 12 rounds and 24 races being held in 2024, more racing km (5,471) will be staged than last year where 5,360km took place despite four more races being staged.

This is mainly due to the Taupo and Sydney round hosting extended back to back 200km races and the Sprint round races also being extended by around 30km.

There is also much more racing at Albert Park with a pair of 105km and 80km races taking place, well up from last year when just one race was held over 100km.

The fan favourite Bathurst 1000, Adelaide 500, Townsville 500, Sandown 500 and Gold Coast 500 events will continue with the same formats.

There will also be more Top 10 Shootouts seen throughout the year with the one-lap dash added to all races at the Taupo and Darwin rounds, propping up the title up to 16 from 11.

The other sprint events will have the usual single session to decide the grid.

However, a three-part knockout uplifting system similar to Formula 1 will be seen at both Wanneroo and Symmons Plains.

There has also been an increase in practice time with the single 90-minute session that debuted at Wanneroo will also be rolled out at Hidden Valley, Sydney Motorsport Park, Symmons Plains and critically no track Taupo.

There will be only one practice session for Supercars drivers to come to grips with Taupo.

Half hour sessions will be seen at Albert Park and Adelaide, which will increase to 40 minutes at Townsville, Sandown and Gold Coast. Both Bathurst rounds will have 60-minute practice sessions.

The tyre allocations have also been revealed with the Soft tyre being seen at the Melbourne SuperSprint, Perth SuperSprint, Townsville 500, Sydney SuperNight, Bathurst 1000, Gold Coast 500 and Adelaide 500.

The SuperSoft will be used at the Darwin Triple Crown, Tasmania SuperSprint and Sandown 500.

The only hard tyre round will be the season opening Bathurst 500.
