Brock Bathurst winner heading to Adelaide

Brock 1982 Holden VH Commodore SS

By Thomas Miles

The first car to win multiple Bathurst 1000s, Peter Brock’s 1982 and 1983 Holden VH Commodore SS, is coming to the 2024 Adelaide Motorsport Festival.

The Holden Dealer Team VH Commodore joins the two Nissan Skyline GT-R R32s in the new PremiAir Hire Bathurst winners category at the event to be held on the Adelaide street circuit from March 16-17.

The #05 VH Commodore SS achieved its first Great Race glory at the hands of Brock and Larry Perkins in 1982.

After an initial battle with poleman Allan Grice ended in a spin, Brock and Perkins enjoyed an untroubled journey to victory and put an entire lap on the rest of the field.

It was the first chapter of their famous Bathurst three-peat and the same VH Commodore SS played an unexpectedly starring role a year later.

That particular Holden started the race as the #25 for John Harvey and Phil Brock to race as the sister entry.

But when the #05 engine blew as early as lap 8, Brock and Perkins transferred themselves into Harvey’s car and drove it to another Bathurst glory, while Phil watched from the sidelines.

The victory margin was once again a lap ahead of Allan Moffat’s Mazda RX-7.

With the VH Commodore SS being updated to 1983 specifications and taking the chequered flag first with Brock behind the wheel, it became the first car to win the Great Race twice.

It has since been achieved by the “Golden Child” VX Commodore of the Holden Racing Team and Mark Skaife in 2001 and 2002, plus Shane van Gisbergen’s Triple Eight ZB Commodore in 2020 and 2022.

The HDT VH is the third to head to Adelaide as part of the PremiAir Hire Bathurst winners category alongside the two Nissan Skyline GT-R R32s that won the 1991 and 1992 Great Races respectively.
