F1 confirm six events for the 2024 Sprint calendar

By Reese Mautone

Formula 1 has confirmed that it will host six Sprint weekends in the 2024 season, with the events set to take place in China, Miami, Austria, Austin, Brazil and Qatar.

Having each hosted Sprint weekends since the format’s introduction in 2021, Austria and Brazil will remain on the Sprint calendar in 2024.

These destinations will be accompanied by soon-to-be two-time hosts, Austin and Qatar, who respectively held the revised events for the first time this year.

There will notably be two new introductions in the early stages of the calendar next year, with China joining the lineup for Round 5, along with Miami in the following round.

“I am delighted to announce six exciting venues for next season’s F1 Sprint events, including two new hosts China and Miami, both of which will be fantastic additions and provide great racing for all our fans at the race and watching at home,” Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, said.

“Since its creation in 2021, the Sprint has been consistent in delivering increased audiences on TV, more on track entertainment for the fans at events and increased fan engagement on social and digital platforms, and we are looking forward to the exciting events next year.”

According to data released by Nielsen covering 21 markets, the broadcast audience for Sprint qualifying at the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix increased by 83% when compared to the 2022 second practice session.

At the United States Grand Prix, broadcast viewership increased by 139%, with data also reflecting a 34% increase at the Belgian Grand Prix.

At the F1 Commission meeting held in November, a majority called for an update to the Sprint format ahead of 2024 with hopes of further rationalising the events by separating Sprint-related activities from those affecting the Grand Prix.

The Sporting Advisory Committee will continue to iron out details up until their first meeting in 2024, with discussions regarding parc fermé conditions and changes to the format remaining ongoing to combat any concerns.

After the committee meets, final amendments to the format will be announced.
