GT Fabrication Bunbury Rallysprint ready to roll

By Timothy Neal

A big field is all set to take on the streets of Bunbury in WA for the GT Fabrication Bunbury Rallysprint this weekend, November 18-19.

107 crews are ready to roll into sunny Bunbury to race on the street course in the Halifax Light Industrial Area with 11 classes on show, with all the action free to watch at the designated spectator points (listed at bottom of article).

A 4km course will await the competitors, with four clockwise and four anti-clockwise passes, with a huge range of classic and modern rally cars set to take on the tarmac.

Some of classic makes include Mini, Mustang, Datsun, Triumph, Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Escort, and Holden Commodore, with the oldest make being a 1964 Ford Falcon Sprint owned by local  local Wayne Turner, whilst the modern field includes vehicles like the Dodge Viper, Porsche, Audi, BMW, Toyota Yaris Rallye, Nissan GTR, Subaru WRX, Mitsubishi Evo’s and a Tesla EV.

With the timed clock set to go on Sunday, Saturday the 18th allows fans to get up close and personal to the machinery for the Show ’n’ Shine from 6.00pm to 8.30pm at the Pat Usher Foreshore on Blair Street.

Last year saw Matt Cherry’s pocket rocket 1982 Toyota Starlet take the top-step when the fancied 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X of ex-AFL footballer Troy Wilson (recent winner of the Tarmac West Rallysprint) went down early when a dump pipe broke off the turbo

Cherry is back fro another crack in the Racing Dynamics built Starlet, and he’s looking to push his 1.8-litre turbo, 2WD, 420 rear-wheel horsepower machine to another win.

“The crowd was great and a lot of people came to have a chat about the car and the first thing they asked was ‘what’s is this thing?’ which is quite funny but they all loved the little rocket,” Cherry said about last year.

Event Director Ross Tapper added that Bunbury has been one of the most successful Rallysprint events in WA, and he expects the local crowd to turn out in droves once again.

“Competitors love the short and fast Rallysprint format and Bunbury locals always turn out in droves to watch the rally cars race – the atmosphere is always exciting in Bunbury.”
