SRO to run standalone GT4 Australia series in 2024

By Timothy Neal

Top-level SRO promoted GT racing in Australia will expand in 2024 with confirmation that GT4 cars will compete as a stand alone category as part of the Motorsport Australia national championship.

As reported in the latest issue of AUTO ACTION, GT4 will have its own category and no longer be a part of the Australian Production Car championship, with the parent SRO group to take the reins and manage the series under a Motorsport Australia Category Management Agreement.

This season saw a GT4 field racing within the Australian Production Car series, with the SRO Motorsport group (who own the intellectual property and BOP for GT4) now set to take full control of its product from ARG.

Property of the SRO Motorsport Group – which launched it in 2007 – GT4 has developed into one of the world’s most successful Motorsport categories with thousands of cars sold and more than 300 currently racing in more than 20 SRO promoted or licensed series around the globe.

The six round series will be a part of the SpeedSeries event program, and will have its first round in April at Phillip Island on April 12-14.

The category will also visit The Bend in South Australia, Queensland Raceway, Sydney Motorsport Park and the mecca of local motorsport – Mount Panorama, Bathurst.

Racing formats and other regulations for the all-new GT4 Australia Category will be confirmed in due course.

Founder and Global CEO of SRO Motorsports Group, Stephane Ratel said the group is excited to take the category proper into the Australian market.

“SRO are very excited to enter GT4 Australia into the Australian Motorsport market as a stand-alone category for the first time in 2024,” Ratel said.

“We see GT4 as a vital piece in the growth of GT Racing throughout Australia as we plan on building GT Racing in Australia as we have globally.

“GT4 globally is a category designed for both semi-professional and young aspiring professional drivers which is why we will be implementing the same philosophy in Australia.”

Michael Smith, Director of Motorsport & Commercial Operations from Motorsport Australia, says that the GT4 Australia series is looking forward to seeing the category grow under the guidance of SRO.

“It’s going to be an exciting year for GT4 in Australia, with a new standalone series in 2024 part of the Shannons SpeedSeries suite of categories,” Smith said.

“We’ve already seen its potential this year and it has certainly proven to be a popular category. We look forward to seeing it grow further under SRO’s leadership as a standalone series as part of a broader global GT platform.”
