Famous motorcycles to join Adelaide Motorsport Festival

By Thomas Miles

There will be plenty of two-wheel action the 2024 Adelaide Motorsport Festival with a 500cc championship-winning bike and former Aussie star Kevin Magee joining the expanded field.

An “enhanced” motorbike category is promised for the South Australian event to be held on March 16-17 next year with Australian 500cc Grand Prix winner Magee leading the way.

The Horsham born rider will ride the 1992 Yamaha YZR500 0WE0 which helped Wayne Rainey win that year’s 500cc world title for Roberts Yamaha.

Rainey edged out Australian icon Mick Doohan by four points in the fight for the 1992 title having won at Catalunya, Magny Cours and Interlagos.

Magee himself rode that Yamaha model in three races in 1993 for Nohontelecom RT Yamaha.

This arrived at the very end of the Australians career which began in 1987. In just his sixth race Magee tasted the ultimate success, winning the Spanish Grand Prix in 1988 for the Roberts Yamaha team.

After over three decades away Roberts will be reiniquanted with the Yamaha in his first appearance at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival.

In recent years Magee has been a familiar face on Fox Sports’ Motogp broadcasts.

The late 1980s and early 1990s is considered to be a golden era of 500cc grand prix motorcycle racing, with the prototypes producing between 160 and 190 horsepower for minimal weight.

The 1992 Yamaha YZR500 0WE0 is the first of many bikes bound for the Adelaide Motorsport Festival.

More grand prix bikes, plus Superbikes and riders are set to be confirmed in coming months.

In addition to the motorbikes, V8 Supercars, Group C and A touring cars, sportscars, IndyCars and more will again feature.

The Yamaha has joined the Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 and Mazda 767B rotary-powered sportscar on the 2024 Adelaide Motorsport Festival.
