Global Brit thrilled to be new Porsche King of the Mountain

King bathurst 2023

By Thomas Miles

A new king was crowned at Mount Panorama over the weekend in the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia where an English ace bowled over the Aussie locals.

Harry King had never seen the famed 6.213km of Mount Panorama before last weekend, but leaves the country having well and truly made an impression.

The 22-year-old Mobil 1 Porsche Supercup star stole the show, taking all three wins, round honours, plus setting a new Bathurst lap record.

King’s exploits mean that there are now six winners from as many rounds in the 2023 Porsche Carrera Cup season.

Despite the EMA Motorsport driver’s dominance, it was far from easy as the youngster had to fend off fellow BWT Lechner Racing Mobil 1 Supercup driver Harri Jones.

The pair found themselves side by side up Mountain Straight on lap four of the second of three races on the weekend.

Jones got his nose in front of King as they approached the fast Griffins Bend, but a little love tap from the Brit unsettled the Aussie, who had to pull off an impressive save to stay away from the barriers.

The aggressive and exciting clash proved to be the deciding moment as Jones was unable to mount another significant challenge despite applying the pressure amid the record-breaking pace set in the finale.

The Mobil 1 Supercup stars were the class drivers of the weekend, finishing first and second in all three races.

King was thrilled to reign supreme at the Mountain which actually took him by surprise.

“It’s an immense feeling,” King said.

“Doing one win alone on the Friday was good enough but to follow it up with another two and score three wins on the Mountain at Bathurst was incredible.

“I’m super grateful to EMA Motorsport for giving me the tools to do the job.

“We proved our dominance in that race by setting a new lap record so I think we ticked nearly every box that could be ticked this weekend.

“This circuit is incredible. I didn’t expect it to be the way it was.

“It’s definitely a big challenge to learn with just a short free practice session and this is one of the highlights of my career so far.”

For King to describe Bathurst glory as one of the biggest moments of his fledgling career is notable.

He burst into the scene by winning 12 of the 16 races in the 2020 Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain season.

Two years later he showed similar dominance in the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux, winning all but one of the races he started to cruise to another title.

During that same 2022 season King stepped up to BWT Lechner Racing in the top level Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and finished fifth.

In 2023 he stepped it up a notch, claiming three wins at Monaco, Hungaroring and Monza to finish third in the championship.

Time will tell whether or not King will return to defend his crown at the Mountain, but there is no doubt he has left his mark on Aussie Carrera Cup racing.
