Van Gisbergen scores strong second in Daybreaker Rally

Shane van Gisbergen once again impressed the rally world by finishing second to a dominant Hayden Paddon at the Daybreaker Rally in New Zealand last weekend.
A week after the Sandown 500, van Gisbergen swapped tarmac for dirt and took part in round four of the 2023 New Zealand Rally Championship held in challenging conditions in the Manawatu and Rangitikei districts.
The reigning Supercars champion exchanged his Triple Eight Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for an Audi S1 AP4 and did not look out of place at all.
Whilst WRC driver Paddon was in a league of his own, winning all 11 stages, van Gisbergen raised just as many eyebrows beating the regulars at their own game.
The two-time Bathurst 1000 winner finished a comfortable second with co-driver Glen Weston, three minutes and eight seconds behind Paddon and two minutes and 11 seconds ahead of third placed Raina Horan and Dave Neill in a Skoda.
Van Gisbergen started strong, settling into second behind Paddon from the opener and never let the position go.
Van Gisbergen said on social media he is thrilled to be the runner-up after the Daybreaker Rally threw up many challenges from dust and rain.
“Glen and I ended up second which was an awesome result,” he said on Facebook.
“There were challenging conditions with dust in the morning and torrential rain in the afternoon but the car was faultless!
“I am looking forward to the next one in a month’s time.”
With rain and wind causing grief, only 60 of the 88 cars completed all nine stages from Watershed to Manfeild.
Shane van Gisbergen will make his next rallying appearance at the Rally Bay of Plenty event which is sandwiched between the Bathurst 1000 and Gold Coast 500 races.
