The million dollar Sprintcar race

At the Eldora Speedway in Ohio 83 of the worlds best Sprintcar racers, including seven Aussies, are racing for the biggest purse in Sprintcar history.

The race is happening tomorrow evening with pre-race ceremonies beginning at 7:15 local time, but the qualifying which is split into group A and B is currently underway.

James McFadden, Jamie Veal, Lachlan McHugh, Kerry Madsen and Ian Madsen, Cody Maroske, and Trent Pigdon, make up the Aussie contingent vying for the historic purse.

The winner of the extravagant 50 lap race will take home a cool $1,002,023 dollars at the half mile (0.8km) Speedway, the second biggest purse in Motorsport in 2023, topped only by the Indy 500.

Whilst Eldora Speedway is known for its million dollar prize pools, the life altering amount is the first time the jackpot has hit that figure in Sprintcars, with two such awards having gone to dirt late-model racers previously.

With qualification for the final based on a point system, tonight’s Qualifying, Heats, and B and A main Features to set the heat lineups for Thursday nights heats prior to the big one.

Six 10 lap heats will be held tomorrow evening, with the top three from each heat to qualify for the Eldora Millions race.

Fourth through to sixth place finishers will take part in the B-Feature, whilst seventh down will take on the C-Feature, with the remainder of the total $1.4 million prize pool to be divided up accordingly.

The top two from the C-Feature will advance to the B-Feature, with the top six of those 15 laps to set the grid from 19th to 24th in the Millions.

The heat race winners will draw positions 1-6, second place getters 7-12, and third place finishers 13-18.

“All of us at Eldora are super excited to host the first million-dollar-to-win Sprintcar race,” Eldora Speedway owner Tony Stewart said. 

“This will showcase the best of the best, and you’re going to want to see how this race unfolds where in the final laps, with guys still in the hunt running close together, what they will do to win a million dollars.”
