PremiAir Racing has announced it has poached internationally respected engineer, Romy Mayer, from Triple Eight Race Engineering.

Mayer is in the middle of a motorsport career that has spanned 13 years, which includes stints in the German DTM and Blancpain Asia (now GT World Challenge Asia).

Supercars fans will remember her from the 2022 Bathurst 1000, where she led the Supercheap Auto #888 Commodore driven by Craig Lowndes and Declan Fraser to a best ever wildcard result of P8.

But after an eight-year stint at Triple Eight, Mayer is looking forward to a new challenge at PremiAir Racing where her position is yet to be revealed.

“I am super excited to be back in the Supercar paddock with Nulon Racing,” she said.

“They have made some big gains this season already, and I am looking forward to chasing the big dogs and hunting some podiums and even a race win with my new team.”

James Golding has been the experienced and respected Doctor Geoffrey Slater.

But the engineering position has been less stable on Tim Slade’s side of the garage with Sheldon Auhl originally named before Phillip Di Fazio, Blake Smith and Rhys Lenegan have shared stints at the helm of car #23.

PremiAir Racing marks a new chapter in Mayer’s long motorsport career, which started at Mercedes Motorsport in DTM.

She worked for the “three pointed star” for four years before moving down under to begin her stint at Triple Eight Race Engineering.

She joined the team in September 2015 just before Craig Lowndes and Steven Richards’ Great Race glory.

Mayer played a big role in Jamie Whincup’s famous seventh and final championship crown in 2017 working as the data engineer alongside David Cauchi and Grant McPherson.

She then stepped up as a race engineer in 2019 when she led Kurt Kostecki’s Super2 entry, which finished second in the championship despite finishing no higher than third in race.

During that same year Mayer worked on Triple Eight’s engineering team in GT3 in Asia, where she scored Pro Am title success last year.

PremiAir Racing’s announcement has arrived on International Women in Engineering Day and with Mayer a FIA Girls on Track Ambassador and co-founder of the Future Female program where she goes to schools to encourage females to pursue STEM based careers.

“I think it is pretty cool my announcement has arrived on International Women in Engineering Day,” Mayer said.

“International Women in Engineering Day is all about raising awareness about the women pursuing engineering and transforming the world with their achievements, so I think the timing is quite fitting.

“Encouraging women and girls to pursue careers in STEM and motorsport is a real passion of mine, and I look forward to continuing my work in this area while being a part of the Nulon Racing team.”

PremiAir Racing will be on track at the Townsville 500 on July 7-9.
