WATERS VICTORY HOPES UP IN FLAMES

There is drama at every turn of the opening race of the Darwin Triple Crown after Cameron Waters lost his lead due to his Monster Mustang going up in flames.
After getting a strong start, it was smooth sailing for Waters as he started the third lap until a fire suddenly ignited under his bonnet.
By Turn 1 flames engulfed the entire front end and the Tickford star had to pull over on the exit of the hairpin and hurriedly jump out of the car for safety.
Thankfully Waters emerged from the scary moment unscathed and assisted Marshalls in extinguishing the fire.
Waters’ incident is the third Ford fireball of the season after Nick Percat and James Courtney both suffered the same fate at the Australian Grand Prix.
Waters reflected on the scary moment on Fox Sports and was visibly distraught after his hopes of victory went up in flames.
“I am fine, just pissed off, but it is what it is,” he said.
“I got a good start and started looking after the tyre. The car was feeling really good and came onto the front straight and had a fire in my foot well.
“The bonnet had a weird flap into the last corner but I just thought I hit something and then it was on fire down the front straight.
“By turn 1 the engine was switched off and there was fire everywhere so at that point I had to bail and got a fire extinguisher to put it out.
“I had to get out of the thing as quick as I could and the Marshalls were great
“There will be a fair bit of damage.”
There are still 18 laps remaining with Mark Winterbottom leading the field and hoping to secure a dream maiden win for Team 18 and his first in seven years.
