Kostecki hits back at Waters’ parity complaints

Championship leader Brodie Kostecki had a direct message for Cameron Waters, who was often outspoken about the parity debate in Tasmania.

Throughout the Tasmania SuperSprint, Waters was complaining he was not in the same fight as the Camaros.

After losing a podium to Shane van Gisbergen on the final lap of Saturday’s Race 10, the Monster Mustang driver cried “I feel like I am in a gunfight with a knife at the moment”.

Waters also claimed the Camaros had “less wobbles and have more turn” than his Mustang.

After Race 11 he also continued believing the Chevrolets possessed much greater tyre life than the Fords.

However, in that same race Waters climbed up six positions from 10th to fourth and finished just two tenths off the podium.

After finishing second in Race 11, Kostecki had a clear message for Waters.

“I saw Cam was not too far behind as well and I think he started 10th or 11th, so he has got plenty of pace in that Ford Mustang. That is for sure,” he said on Fox Sports.

The #99 Erebus Motorsport driver made his point even clearer in the post-event press conference.

Kostecki claimed Waters was actually fastest down the straights, but questioned his rival’s complaints given his qualifying run-ins with fellow Ford competitors.

“Cam was P1 in all of the straight sectors I am pretty sure,” he said.

“He ran into another Ford in each qualifying session, so I don’t really know how they can complain about parity when they keep running into each other.”

For Kostecki himself, Sunday was an important step in his championship campaign.

The opening day of the Tasmania SuperSprint was the first major setback of the season with car #99 restricted to P24 after contact with the fence on the exit of the hairpin.

But Kostecki showed strong resilience to bounce back well with a pair of poles and podiums on Sunday to retain a handy 87-point buffer at the top of the table.

Looking ahead he hopes the team can utilise an upcoming test to show even better form at the NT.

“I am pretty happy with today (Sunday). It was a lot better than Saturday getting a good bag of points for the team,” he said.

“It is great to see the car speed has transitioned to this place. It is a strange place this track so it is good to see it continue.

“There were a few changes we made in that last race that made a pretty good difference and I felt quite strong up until the pit stop.

“We have a test day before Darwin I am pretty sure, so we will try a few things to stay ahead of the other guys because we will have to develop the cars as much as possible.”

The Darwin Triple Crown will be held on June 16-18.
