Hedge dominates at Road America

By Timothy Neal

Callum Hedge has swept Round 2 of the Formula Regional America Championship at Wisconsin’s Road America to take the series lead.

The talented 19-year-old Kiwi – who’s also racing in his second season of the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia for Earl Bamber Motorsport, and took pole at the Australian Grand Prix – was in unstoppable form in the #17 Crosslink Kiwi Motorsports Ligier JS F3 in the FRAC series.

After taking pole, Hedge charged on to win all three races, resuming his battle with American Ryan Shehan who he did battle with in NZ at the Formula Regional Oceania Championship earlier in the year.

Shehan took P2 for all three races, as did Cooper Becklin with the P3’s, making it a hat trick of podium hat tricks for the weekend at Atlanta’s Road America course.

Hedge took the top step over Shehan (R) and Becklin (L) for all three races at Road America

The youngster, who is backed by a consortium of supporters like Giltrap Group, the Tony Quinn Foundation, and Tasman Motorsports Group, led every lap lights-to-flag to leave his mark on the six round, 18 race series.

“It’s great to get the three wins and show the real potential we have over here in the states,” Hedge commented.

“It’s a long way from home, and to be able to perform over here is a really cool feeling, and it’s awesome to repay all those who backed me to get to this point.

“I wouldn’t be here without the help of the Tony Quinn Foundation and Giltrap Group, and I just can’t thank them enough for their faith in me.”

Hedge now returns to Australia to compete at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway with Team New Zealand in the Carrera Cup in June, before he then heads back to the FRAC series

June will be a massive month, and then we will jump on the plane back over to America for Round 3.

It’s going to be busy, but I’m living my dream driving race cars, so I’ll make sure I’m at my best.”

Round 3 of the FRAC series is at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio on June 22-25.
