Shahin and Patterson push Porsche to maiden series win

porsche patterson shahin perth win

EMA Motorsport’s Yasser Shahin and Garnet Patterson have pushed Porsche to its maiden GT World Challenge Australia victory at Perth.

The opening 60-minute race of the weekend was a dramatic affair where the Porsche pair held off the Prince Abu Bakar Ibrahim/Jamie Whincup by a second.

Series leader Liam Talbot was initially in the box seat, leading early, but his race quickly spiralled from bad to worse amid a crazy first half hour.

A mistake at the final corner saw Talbot lose the lead before side-by-side contact with lapped car Justin McMillan at the same scene left him with more damage.

The #65 Audi soon spun at the first corner and then elected to retire after just 19 laps.

With Talbot out of action, the Geoff Emery and Christopher Mies Audi took the lead, but the EMA Porsche was in the box seat not having to serve any penalty time.

Due to this advantage, when Shahin handed over to Patterson in the mid-race pit stops the #1 Porsche 911 GT3R claimed a lead it would never lose.

Whincup tried his best, but could not hunt Patterson down and only just held off the Emery/Mies Audi as just 1.8s separated the top three across the line.

Fourth was the second Triple Eight Mercedes of Prince Jefri Ibrahim and Richie Stanaway, while rounding out the top five were Ross Poulakis and Jayden Ojeda.

The GT World Challenge has another one-hour race ahead on Sunday at 10.25 AWST.
