By Bruce Williams

Steven Johnson takes the Trophy Race win and delivers Mustang another Bathurst race win, while making it 200 TCM race wins for Ford.

The weekends Touring Car Masters racing has kicked off at the Supercheap Autos Bathurst International with the ‘Trophy Race’.

Holden Torana driver Ryan Hansford started from pole after he had power steering issues in qualifying, which saw him qualify in tenth place, however the inverted Trophy Race grid saw him start on the front row alongside Ford Mustang driver Tony Karanfilovski.

The race started in warm and sunny conditions, Hansford lead off the rolling start into turn 1, but it wasn’t long before Johnson starting out of third position in the #33 Moffat Mustang Brut 33 tribute Mustang grabbed second spot as the field ran up ‘Mountain Straight’.

The pair were in close contact over the first lap and as the pair entered ‘The Chase’ Johnson dived down the inside for the tight right hander and despite locking the left front wheel he took the pass with a clean move.

In only his second event in the Russell Hancock owned Mustang, Johnson led the race and ultimately took the win from Hansford when the safety car came out following Adam Bressington’s visit to the turn one sand trap.

The race ended behind the safety car and behind the leading pair George Miedecke in the Whiteline Chevrolet Camaro took third place.
