CHEVROLET RELEASE CAMARO DRAG CAR AT BATHURST

By Timothy Neal

Amongst the backdrop of the Bathurst 1000, Chevrolet has released its GM designed, Camaro based ‘Slammer’ drag car to complement its Gen3 Supercar.

The fire breathing Camaro features a 3,500hp supercharged V8 that will propel it over a quarter mile track in under 5.7 seconds, with speeds well in-excess of 410km/h.

Chris Payne, the general manager of Chevrolet Racing, is excited to introduce the new addition to its multi pronged motorsport brand.

“This is the next exciting addition to the Chevrolet Racing programme.  This isn’t a concept or a digital rendering, it’s a real fire breathing Camaro that will debut in professional drag racing competition at the highest level later this year,” Payne explained.

“Chevrolet Racing is the new heart for the fans who have followed Holden in Australasian motorsport for more than 50 years.

“As the big brother to the Gen3 Supercar, this race car demonstrates the ongoing commitment of GM ANZ to motorsports at the highest levels.”

With GM having been an integral player in the Australian drag racing scene with the Fabietti ACDelco Race team over the last 15 years, the Camaro ‘Slammer’ will no doubt add to their already successful record over the recent years with the Monaro.

They won the 2017 national Pro Slammer the 3,500hp Monaro, and was most recently the runner up in the 2021 WinterNationals.

“We anticipate the lightweight carbon fibre body will allow us to develop some significant aero advantages and are confident we’ll see some sub-5.7 second quarter mile times,” said Maurice Fabietti, owner and team principal.

“After 12 months in build, it goes without saying that we’re more than excited with the new car and can’t wait to set it loose with driver Sam Fenech against the competition later this year.”

Debuting in the same stealthy black and gold livery as the Gen3 Supercar, the new Chevrolet Racing drag car will compete in 2023 wearing its traditional all-makes ACDelco red, white and blue colour scheme.
