Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint Supports, Garry’s Friday Wrap

By Garry O'Brien

There is a good line up of support categories to the Supercars at the Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint. Three went through their practice paces while one category qualified and raced.

Heinrich was the fastest at the end of Fridays sessions

DUNLOP SUPER2/SUPER3

Quick times in the second practice session saw Matt White Motorsport Nissan Altimas, driven by Tyler Everingham and Angelo Mouzouris, score Friday Super2 honours at round four. They edged out the trio of Jack Perkins (Eggleston Motorsport Holden Commodore VF), Cameron Hill (Triple Eight VF) and Zak Best (Tickford Ford Falcon FG/X) who were the top three in practice one.

Season pacesetter Kai Allen (Eggleston Commodore VE) showed the way in Super3 ahead of Brad Vaughan (Anderson Motorsport Falcon FG) and Blake Fardell (Mr HDT Race Cars VE). Fourth overall and best of the Super3 Cup class was Jim Pollicina (VE) ahead of the Fords piloted by Jason Gomersall, Chris Smerdon and Ray Hislop.

The two practice sessions were both interrupted by red flags, twice. In the first Cameron Crick (VF) hit the Turn 3 barrier and later Zane Morse (VF) slid off at Turn 1. Jarred Danaher (FG) caused the first one in practice two when he couldn’t regain the track at Turn 3, and towards the end of the session, Aaron Seton (VF) bunkered at Dandenong Road.

PAYNTER DIXON PORSCHE CARRERA CUP

Adrian Flack was fastest of the Pro-Am drivers

All the quick times came in the later practice session two in the lead up to round six. Aaron Love set the fastest ever Carrera Cup lap to head the Pros while Adrian Flack topped the Morris Pro-Am class.

Love was 0.2 seconds clear of the field, with the next 19 covered by one second. Max Vidau was second and David Wall third. Then came Christian Pancione, Dylan O’Keeffe, and Ryan Suhle with six different teams in the top six.

Second in Pro-Am was Liam Talbot ahead of Sam Shahin, Dean Cook, Stephen Grove, Tim Miles, Matt Belford and Geoff Emery who was fastest in session one.

BATTERY WORLD AUSSIE RACING CARS

Joel Heinrich followed on from being fastest in qualifying, to lead the first race of the seventh and final round from start to finish. He had a comfortable two second margin in the end. Behind him, team mates Cody Brewczynski and Ryan Reynolds headed Kody Garland, Josh Anderson and Ryder Quinn in a close contest for second.

There was another group of three, a similar distance behind, with Anthon Di Mauro just in front of Courtney Prince and Lachlan Ward. The race was under a safety car at the end of the first lap due to Troy Jones who was stranded on the outside of Turn 3 after he was tapped into a spin.

GAZOO TOYOTA 86s

Fastest in both sessions ensured that Zach Bates had first day honours at the season’s fourth outing of 2022. Combined times had him 0.4s ahead of Clay Richards with Jobe Stewart third. Fourth at the end of the day was Lachlan Gibbons in front of James Holdsworth.

Toyota guest driver Warren Luff was next in front of Campbell Logan, David Schulz, Jayden Wanzek and Christison. Reuben Goodall finished 11th ahead of the Fabian Coulthard who is the second Toyota guest driver for the weekend.
