GARRY’S SYDNEY SUPERNIGHT SUPPORT WRAP – DAY 1

By Garry O'Brien

Rain on and off throughout the day made conditions tough for all support categories on the first day of the Beaurepairs Sydney SuperNight at Sydney Motorsport Park.

DUNLOP SUPER2/SUPER3

The changing weather conditions meant that the times set in the first outing would stand for the rest of the day. Eggleston Motorsport were the fastest team in Super2 with Matt McLean (Holden Commodore VF), and in Super3 as well with Kai Allen (Commodore VE).

Image Racing’s Jaylyn Robotham (VF) was second fastest from Cameron Hill (Triple Eight VF) with Matt Payne fourth in the Grove Racing Nissan Altima. Jay Hanson (Image VF) and Aaron Seton (Matt Stone Racing VF) ensued ahead of Cameron Crick (EM VF) and Declan Fraser (T8 VF).

Behind 16-year-old Allen in Super3 were Jim Pollicina (VE), Brad Vaughan (Anderson Motorsport Ford Falcon FG), Chris Smerdon (MSR FG) and Garry Hill who survived a wild off at Turn 1 that ended with him nudging the tyre barrier near Turn 2.

TOURING CAR MASTERS

Six drivers headed the qualifying session before Greg Hansford secured pole position in his Holden Torana A9X. Six time TCM champion John Bowe, also in a Torana, was second fastest with George Miedecke (Chev Camaro) third.

In his Ford Falcon XD, Steve Johnson headed the session at the start, and ultimately ended up fourth ahead of Cameron Tilley (Valiant Pacer) and Jamie Tilley (Ford Mustang). The session was reflagged due to Tony Karanfilovski having a drama.

After the resumption, Marcus Zukanovic (XD) was eighth ahead of Jim Pollicina (Torana Hatchback), Cam Mason (Mustang), and John Adams and Andrew Fisher in their Ford Falcon XY GTs. They were followed by Ben Dunn (Chev Monza), Karanfilovski, Mark King (Camaro), Warren Trewin (Holden Monaro) and Leo Tobin (Mustang).

TOYOTA GAZOO 86s

The single-make category copped wet conditions for both their practice sessions. In the first outing, Harrison Gray was fastest in what would be the benchmark time for the day. He was 0.01s ahead of Zach Bates who clocked his best time as the checkered flag came out.

Lachlan Gibbons was third of the 36 entries in front of Rylan Gray, Campbell Logan, Ryan Casha, Jack Westbury and Toyota guest driver Warren Luff. Then followed Andrew Shajh, Ryan Gilroy, Jobe Stewart, Reuben Goodall and the second guest, Jonathon Webb.

Several drivers, including Hugh Zochling, Ryan Hadden, Lachlan Bloxsom, Emerson Harvey and Madison Dunstan had spins moments in the later session. The latter brought out the red flag when she was marooned in the sand at Turn 1.

AUSSIE RACING CARS

Aussie Racing Cars rookie Cody Brewczynski steered his Mustang-bodied racer to victory over fellow Mustang drivers Tom Hayman and Kody Garland who led to the first corner from the second row.

Garland led the first three laps before Brewczynski grabbed the lead as they started the fourth. Hayman also displaced the former race leader and chased Brewczynski to the checkered flag. Behind Garland, Anderson maintained fourth despite a 5s penalty for a starting infringement.

Behind the leading four, Ryan Reynolds (Mustang) was fifth ahead of Ryder Quinn (Euro GT), Reece Chapman (Mustang) and a spirited dice that would last the rest of the race. John Steffensen (Mustang) held eighth initially until passed by Craig Woods (Mustang) who then had to ward off a challenge from Matt Forbes-Wilson (Camaro). Steffensen ultimately finished eleventh behind Courtney Prince (Mustang).

Earlier Brewczynski qualified fastest ahead of Hayman, Anderson, Garland, Ward, Reynolds, Chapman, Steffensen, Ryder Quinn and Prince.
