CAMARO DRAG CAR SET FOR 2022 DEBUT

GM Australia and New Zealand will debut a brand-new Chevrolet Camaro Drag Car in the 2022 championship.
Currently in its construction phase in the USA, the new design will be campaigned by the ACDelco Camaro Slammer Drag Racing team in Australia next year under the guidance of Team Principal Maurice Fabietti.
The announcement aligns with the approaching shift to new generation Camaro’s in both the NASCAR Cup Series and Supercars Championship in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
The Aftersales Marketing Manager of GM Australia and New Zealand, Chris Payne, believed that the new machines would strengthen international ties within the brand.
“This illustrates the strong ties between GM Australia New Zealand and GM North America, utilising Camaro to link the markets across three forms of motorsport, specifically drag racing, Supercars and NASCAR,” Payne said.
“GM ANZ is making a significant statement introducing the Camaro to drag racing in Australia, one which sits alongside and is complementary to GM’s commitment to Gen3 Supercars.”
GM has teamed up with ACDelco Race team previously, the squad competing with a Monaro bodied Pro Slammer in its championship winning 2017 season.
The Camaro componentry is expected to arrive in ADDelco’s workshop in Australia early next year.
“It will be a major change engineering our race car to the Camaro appearance, but we’re up for the challenge and are ready to make a big statement on the track for ACDelco,” Fabietti said.
“The weight saving alone will be more than worth it, as the carbon fibre body weighs only 30kg.
“This will give us the ability to move ballast around the car, which is something we weren’t able to do before.
“These factors are critical when you’re trying to pilot a 3500hp drag car down the strip to sub-5.7 second quarter mile times.”
“I’m sure there will be some other aero-advantages compared with the old body which we’ll discover as soon as we start to get it race-ready.”
ACDelco will welcome the new Camaro shell with a redesigned livery.
International Hot Rod Association Australia CEO Maurice Allen was looking forward to welcoming the new Camaro to Australian drag racing.
“To allow the new Chevrolet Camaro bodywork into the mix in the category Pro Slammer is exciting,” Allen said.
“This is a great move forward for the fans and the category.
“IHRA is extremely pleased for Maurice Fabietti and his ACDelco Pro Slammer team and we couldn’t think of a better team to represent the iconic Chevy badge.”
