The 2021 MotoGP Grand Prix in Thailand scheduled to take place at the Chang International Circuit from October 15-17 has been cancelled.

The event has been abandoned due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which continues to be responsible for strict restrictions on travel and movement worldwide.

The FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports are still considering a possible replacement event for the MotoGP schedule.

The Thai GP debuted in 2018 in Buriram, however due to the pandemic only the 2018 and 2019 events have gone ahead.

Both iterations were won by Spaniard Marc Marquez on his factory Repsol Honda.

The Thai event is the latest to fall from the calendar and follows less than a month after the cancellation of the Australian Grand Prix.

Scheduled for the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in October this year, the event was one of many motorsport events lost to the logistical barriers caused by COVID-19.

A second race at the Algarve International Circuit in Portugal in November was confirmed to replace the Australian GP.

As it stands, there are nine rounds left for the season in Austria, England, Spain, San Marino, USA, Malaysia and Portugal.

22-year-old Frenchman Fabio Quartararo leads the 2021 competition, sitting 34 points clear of countryman Johann Zarco.

The Yamaha rider is also ahead of Aussie Jack Miller who is fifth for Ducati. Miller has won races in both France and Spain this year.

The next two rounds will take place at the Red Bull Ring in Austria with the first taking place from August 6-8.

As previously reported by AA, three-time MotoGP championship runner-up Dani Pedrosa is set to make a return to the grid in Spielberg, riding as a wildcard entry for factory Red Bull KTM squad in its home grand prix.
