THE UNKNOWNS FOR SUPER2 & 3

At this stage it is unknown which generation Supercars will be eligible for both the Super2 and Super3 in 2022, and this has got teams and drivers concerned.

One of these drivers is Jon McCorkindale, the New South Welshman who won the opening round of the Super3 Series at Bathurst but has elected to surrender his lead and step up to the Super2 Series with next year in mind.

Currently Gen2 machines are raced in the Supercars Championship with a plan to move into Gen3 machinery at some stage next season.

Second-tier Super2 Series competitors currently race Car of the Future cars (built and run in the main game from 2013-2016), with Super3 running cars from 2012 and older.

At this stage Auto Action understands that Super2 competitors will be able to race Gen2 Ford Mustang’s and ZB Commodores from 2022, however they will be paritised against the current VF Commodores and FGX Falcons in the category.

It is unknown what the future of the Super3 Series looks like, however for McCorkindale, the purchase of a COTF machine secures his place in at least one of the lower tiered categories.

Adding to the confusion, AA has heard from several sources that both the Super2 and Super3 cars will be slowed drastically, in order to keep the top-tier Supercars Championship as the fastest category.

The Gen3 machines are expected to be several seconds a lap slower than the current spec cars, meaning that unless some alterations are made, the lower tier series’ will be faster.

AA has heard that the older spec cars will run with taller diff ratios, have the rear wing altered to take downforce from the car, as well the undertrays shrunk.

McCorkindale himself would like to run in Super2 next year and believes that the parity between the two types of Supercar is a must for the category.

“If they said we’re going to bring Mustang and ZBs down, I’d have no dramas with that if it means more numbers on the grid,” McCorkindale told Auto Action

“I’d like to see them paritise it because I don’t think we’re going have 15 ZBs and Mustangs come down. It’d be beneficial for the class to prioritise those cars.”

There has been talk within Supercars of cutting the Super2 Series into two classes, with Super2 A running the Gen2 machinery, while Super2 B will run with the existing cars

This is something that McCorkindale disagrees with heavily.

“I don’t like the idea,” he said. “If they had 30 cars, I would say let’s do it. But if they’re only still going to have 15-18 cars, I would say prioritising the older and newer cars would be better for us.

“If they did have class racing, as long as the exposure is equal for both classes, it could work, but realistically unless they are both getting good numbers, I can’t see the benefit for the class”.
