After breaking through to take the win in last night’s Portuguese Moto2 race, Aussie Remy Gardner already has his sights set on 2021 with his new squad Red Bull KTM Ajo.

In 2020 Gardner scored three podiums with the Onexox TKKR SAG Team and was determined to claim that elusive maiden Moto2 victory in his final race with the Malaysian team.

Gardner did just that after he overtook championship contender Luca Marini on the penultimate lap of the race.

The Aussie was elated with his first win, expressing that he hopes this is the sign of things to come moving forwards.

“It’s a great way to end the season, hopefully this is a glimpse of what’s to come next year,” Gardner said.

“We’ve got some hard work to do now, in pre-season testing and over the winter to see if I can lose a little bit of weight.”

The Sydneysider feels it’s all starting to come together after several challenging years in Moto3 and Moto2.

“Now it’s really starting, I can’t wait to go racing again to be honest, just still on cloud nine, extremely happy, I want to say thank you to everyone that has supported me over the last five years,” he expressed.

“My first ever win, I’ve had a few tough years in Moto3 and Moto2 and I’ve had a few podiums this year and even last year but the win has always eluded us.

“I worked on myself really hard throughout last winter and this year as well and i think the team has done an amazing job this year to give me a very competitive package and in the end.

“We came to a track that I absolutely love, and we managed to win. Honestly, I still don’t have words, I’m on cloud nine at the moment but I just think it still needs to sink in, but, extremely happy.”

By taking the victory Gardner became the first Aussie in the intermediate class to win since Ant West back in 2014 and was an achievement that meant a lot to the proud Gardner.

“Six years, it’s amazing,” Gardner said.

“I feel extremely proud to represent my country, it’s amazing. I’m just extremely proud of everything, I just want to say thank you to everybody that supported me over my whole career because it’s a really, really special moment right now.”
