The summer open-wheel series that typically attracts an array of international drivers will be held again in January, albeit with just three rounds limited to the North Island.

With international travel restrictions still expected to be in place, the move was made to keep costs of entry as low as possible and to encourage as many New Zealand entrants as feasible.

“The fundamental purpose of the Castrol Toyota Racing Series is to develop our homegrown racing talent. This format gives us the ability to continue to promote and support local talent and bring top-class motorsport to the New Zealand public,” said Andrew Davis, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing New Zealand General Manager.

Hampton Downs will host the first two rounds before TRS competitors head to Manfeild for the third and final event.

Organisers have also confirmed that the New Zealand Grand Prix will still take place, but which round is still to be determined.

With previous competitors in the series including current Formula 1 drivers Lando Norris, Lance Stroll, Daniil Kvyat and Nicholas Latifi, next years series is also expected to attract entries from overseas.

New Zealand’s TOYOTA GAZOO Racing is working with MotorSport New Zealand, Sport NZ, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and New Zealand Immigration on permits and logistics to allow international competitors, although a final decision will be made in the next few weeks.

“We have been advised that the Government’s decision on international drivers will take place before the end of November as we have considerable interest in the series this season.” Davis continued.

“The economic contribution of visiting drivers, teams and support members is important to the viability of TRS and the New Zealand motorsport and wider economy so we will continue to work to enable international participation where possible.”

Castrol Toyota Racing Series 2021 Schedule:

Round one: Hampton Downs 22nd – 24th January
Round two: Hampton Downs 28th – 30th January
Round three: Manfeild 12th – 14th February
