It was a spectacular sight watching 40 Commodores and Falcons raced under lights around the Thunderdome in the opposite direction NASCAR fans were accustomed to. However, this homegrown category was immensely popular with 50,000 fans regularly packing out the Colosseum of motorsport to watch terse rivals go to battle.

Featured in the current issue of Auto Action is 10-pages of AUSCAR coverage kicking off with former editor Steve Nally reminiscing about his days covering the series and the excitement that the racing brought.

Steve Bettes was General Manager of Calder for the 10-year period AUSCARs ruled the Thunderdome. An inspired move to night racing proved the turning point for AUSCAR as crowds flocked, entries grew and the racing spectacular.

A five-time AUSCAR champion, Brad Jones along with brother Kim had to learn quick and did so. Jones details his successes at the Thunderdome and a trip to America where he thrilled a massive NASCAR crowd in his title-winning Cooper Tools Commodore.

Auto Action publisher Bruce Williams was right in the thick of the action as one of the front-running competitors in the title. He recalls his fierce rivalries, the comraderies formed and what AUSCAR meant to him.

Along the way, Auto Action speaks to former champions Terry Wyhoon and Marshall J. Brewer, who both thrived on the Thunderdome and went onto bigger and better things thanks to AUSCAR in the motorsport world.
