PHILLIP ISLAND HISTORICS THIS WEEKEND

By Heath McAlpine

Phillip Island will host the 30 year anniversary of the mighty Ford Sierra Cosworth at the Phillip Island Historics ‘Festival of Motor Sport’ this weekend.

10 examples are ready to line up this weekend including a couple from our friends over in England, who will taken on event patron John Bowe in the Mark Petch owned Volvo 240 Turbo that Bowe drove in 1986, Jim Richards in the HR31 Nissan Skyline that guided him to the 1990 championship and Glenn Seton in one of his ex-Peter Jackson Ford Sierra Cosworths. Of course Godzilla will hope to ruin the Ford Sierra celebration with a pair of examples set to be at the front.

Apart from the strong Group A & C field, there are strong fields in both the Group N and Group S classes, with a wide variety of makes and models from the yesteryear ranging from Mustangs and Volvos in Group N, and Corvettes and MGs in Group S. Give Les Walmsley the ‘Hey Charger!’ signal as he flies past in the Group N races.

For Open-wheeler fans the is a strong contingent of ex-Formula 1, F5000 and Indycars as well as strong contingent of Historic Formula Fords.

Get down to the Island as it is sure to be an excellent weekend of racing, and not wanting to tempt fate but the weather looks good across the weekend. Also, if you need that critical back issue of the relaunched Auto Action, come say hi at the AA stand in the paddock where back issues, caps and mugs will be available to purchase.
