Will Davison stars in successful 6 Hour squad

By Thomas Miles

Will Davison is the latest Supercars star to join the Bathurst 6 Hour grid for 2023 in a BMW M3.

Davison will reunite with one of the most successful combinations at the event alongside Beric Lynton and Tim Leahey.

The driver of the famous #17 Ford in the Supercars Championship has one Bathurst 6 Hour start under his belt last year.

Davison also drove with Lynton and Leahey on that occasion where they qualified sixth before early mechanical dramas curtailed their day to eventually finish 27th 11 laps down.

Despite last year’s disappointment, the Lynton and Leahey BMW is one of the most successful teams in 6 Hour history.

The duo won the 2019 race in dominant fashion, leading every tour of the 6.213km circuit to win by an entire lap, plus set a race distance record in the process.

Lynton and Leahey returned in 2021 to defend their crown and finished second, just seven seconds behind the winners.

The Ford star follows in the footsteps of his Dick Johnson Racing Supercars teammate Anton De Pasquale, who will also drive a BMW.

De Pasquale’s DJR co-driver will also be on the grid in a HSV GTS.

Davison knows how to master the mountain, having won the 2009 and 2016 Bathurst 1000’s and he would love to add the Bathurst 6 Hour to that list.

“I really enjoyed being part of the Bathurst 6 Hour with Beric, Tim and the team last year, unfortunately we had a mechanical issue very early on which put us out of contention,” he said.

“I have been very keen to come back and have another shot, I enjoyed the vibe of the event, it’s a fun and different nature of racing, a huge field and massive car speed variances.

“It creates different challenges and has an old school endurance race type feel. All the cars have different strengths and weaknesses and I enjoyed having to adapt to a Production Car and its requirements.

“Importantly we all got on well and had fun, and the chance to race with one of my best friends in Tim is really special.

“We will be giving it our all for victory this year.”

After Leahey’s BMW M3 went ablaze at Queensland Raceway last year, it has been completely rebuilt.

Lynton said he and Leahey are determined to become the first team to win two Bathurst 6 Hour titles.

“We’ve been working hard to rebuild the 2019 Bathurst 6 Hour winning Blue car since Tim had a BBQ at Queensland Raceway last year in Australian Production Cars,” he said.

“We ran it on the weekend for the first time. We had some challenges but ticked a lot of boxes. Still some fine tuning but have another test day with APC on Tuesday which is when Tim and Will get their first drive of the year in the old girl.

“I’m looking forward to a good race and there’s plenty of quality in Class X. We obviously come trying to win and hopefully we (Tim and I) can be the first to win two B6HR titles.”
