Coffs Coast Festival of Motor Sport kicks off

By Timothy Neal

The inaugural Coffs Coast Festival of Motor Sport has gotten underway with the huge month long event running until the end of November.

After the Car show was cancelled due to conditions at the proposed venue, the festival kicked off the RedLine Hill Climb which had 39 competitors and a healthy crowd in attendance.

The 743m tar-sealed hill climb got underway with the open wheelers and road registered cars on a sunny Coffs Coast Sunday in Kempsey, on a track that used to be part of the Pacific Highway.

Dave Morrow had the fastest time of the day in the RedLine Hill Climb to take the outright win

Veteran competitors Dick Willis and Dave Morrow – in their 70’s and 80’s – both competed in their beautiful open wheelers, with Morrow taking out the honours ahead of Wednesday’s second Hill Climb in Raleigh on November 9.

Morrow completed the climb in 25.721s, taking P1 over Paul Waller’s 29.470, with Les Maloneney and Michael Boaden taking out the other classes.

The Raleigh Raceway Burnout Comp was also run on the Sunday, with a big field of modified cars with drivers showing their wares and doing controlled burnouts in front of 200+ spectators over five hours of competition.

This weekend is a big one for the festival, with the Massive Bike Show at the Coffs Harbour Racing Club with a large selection of vintage, veteran, retro, classic and the most modern cycles plus accessories and clothing, running from 10am-7pm.

Also running this weekend, is the NSW Rallycross Championship over the Saturday and Sunday – November 12-13 – at the Raleigh Raceway with gates open from 9am each day.

Paul Waller notched a strong 29.470s at the first round of the Hill Climb

The Champions of Dirt will also be running over the weekend at the Coffs Harbour Motorcycle Track, with Saturday’s Day 1 featuring the dirt track motorcycles, and Sunday featuring the motocross – November 12-13 with gates at 830am.

The following weekend (November 19-20) has Karting and the Kempsey off road racing, but the Sultans of Slide dirt track racing has unfortunately been cancelled.

The weekend of November 26-27 will be one of the biggest weekends of action on this year’s Australian Motorsport calendar, featuring the FIA’s Asia Pacific Rally Championship final, the finale of the Australian Rally championship, the NSW Rally Championship, the Off Road Racing, and Speedway on the Saturday night at the Grafton Speedway.
