Reynolds storms to shock pole

By Thomas Miles

David Reynolds has claimed a shock pole position for the opening race of the 2022 Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 after executing a golden lap of the Surfers Paradise streets.

Reynolds’ 1:10.4319 was four tenths faster than Shane van Gisbergen, while former teammates Cam Waters and Chaz Mostert will share the second row for race 31 of the championship.

It was Reynolds’ 23rd pole of his career, second of the year and third at the Gold Coast and the 37-year-old said it was a near-perfect lap.

“That was one of the best laps of my life. There is no way I could repeat that,” he said in the TV interview.

“My car hooked up and when I came across the line I could not believe I saw a 10.4, so it is unbelievable.”

The result was sweet reward for Grove Racing after the team put in a huge effort to rebuild the #26 Ford Mustang after it was involved in the huge shunt at The Chase at Bathurst.

“They worked so hard over the last few weeks to repair this car because it was pretty badly damaged,” said Reynolds.

“They have done a fantastic job. It was perfect as soon as it rolled out of the truck and I am stocked to be on pole because it is a nice reward for them.”

Reynolds threw down the gauntlet with his blistering lap as the fifth car to take on the Shootout.

He had his Grove Racing Ford Mustang on rails, going half a second faster than his Qualifying best with a shootout lap that rivalled van Gisbergen’s fastest time of the weekend.

Reynolds’ pace was clear from the first sector when he jumped two tenths ahead of previous fastest Waters and continued to fly for the remainder of the lap.

Van Gisbergen will begin his quest to win a third Supercars Championship crown alongside Reynolds on the front row after a mistake at the Turn 4 hairpin proved costly.

Waters was the fastest of the early runners making good use of his fresh right-hand side tyres, while Mostert almost lost both mirrors on his way to P4.

Anton De Pasquale gained five positions from his Qualifying effort and will share the third row with Thomas Randle, who starts in the top six for the fourth time in his rookie year.

James Courtney recorded the slowest time, but will start seventh after Brodie Kostecki and Andre Heimgartner both recorded kerb strikes, while Will Davison locked up coming into Turn 1 and had to shortcut the chicane.

Thanks to Reynolds’ stunning time, van Gisbergen will have a fight on his hands as he looks to secure the 2022 Supercars Championship crown in Triple Eight Race Engineering’s 600th race.
