TRANS AM TITLE ON THE LINE AT SANDOWN

By Timothy Neal

The Trans Am National series will fire up for its debut at Melbourne’s Historic Sandown on September 16-18, with the title up for grabs at the high speed circuit.

The top two contenders, Nathan Herne and Owen Kelly, are separated by just 19 points heading into the decider, with third to seventh in the standings also a mathematical chance of stealing the big show.

Herne swept the last round at the Queensland Raceway, with the GRM driver staying ahead of the mayhem at the front of field, leaving with his second clean sweep of the year and nine wins in the bank.

Third place belongs to Brett Holdsworth in the Ashley Seward Motorsport #99 Chevrolet Camaro, 66 points in arrears of Kelly with 200 points on offer at Sandown.

Kyle Gurton sits in fourth, 31 points off Holdsworth, and after missing the podiums at the Queensland Raceway in August, the #2 Mustang driver will be eager to atone after a consistent year following a stellar round one.

Fifth place-holder Tim Brooke, who was unfortunately ruled out for the remainder of the season, will potentially give way to the series leading rookie, Jon McCorkindale, who sits 135 points off the top in his #69 Mustang.

Hugh McAllister rounds out the drivers with a mathematical shot at the title, 192 points of the pace setter, Herne and his GRM 1# Mustang.

Ben Grice (eighth) is leading the charge for the Victorians after grabbing himself a podium at the SMP in May, with Elliot Barbour (twentieth) in his maiden season, and Grice’s teammate, Nic Carroll (eighteenth) in the #48 Dodge Challenger.

A spate of young guns will take the challenge to the Trans Am field once again, with last round’s debutants Jack Sipp and Tom Hayman taking to the grid once more, as well as Nash Morris, Lochie Dalton, Cody Burcher and Eden Thornburrow.

The #45 Mustang Tasmanian driver, Dalton, accounted for himself superbly in Queensland, picking up two P5’s and a P4 in a super competitive field that included Supercars driver Brodie Kostecki, and young tearaway Jett Johnson, who both featured heavily in the podiums over the three races.

All three Trans Am National races will be covered by Stan Sports live, uninterrupted and on-demand coverage, this weekend, September 16-18 as part of the fourth round of the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championship.
