SUPERCARS CONFIRM ZB COMMODORE AND MUSTANG FOR 2023 DUNLOP SUPER2 SERIES

By Bruce Williams

Supercars has confirmed that the ZB Commodore and Car of the Future Ford Mustang will be the only models eligible to compete for the 2023 Dunlop Super2 series – ruling out all current vehicles for the category past the end of the current series.

The announcement confirms that all Super2 cars will now be eligible for Super3 competition and will compete in that series alongside current eligible vehicles.

The announcement followed a ruling by the Supercars’ Commission.

The decision was made following discussions with current competitors and owners around the technical makeup of the 2023 Dunlop Super2 and Super3 Series.

Supercars Head of Motorsport Adrian Burgess explained the decision:

“Over recent months we held discussions with various stakeholders, and it became apparent that this decision would align with the technical configuration of both Dunlop Series’ moving forward.

“It was unanimously agreed that this was the best decision to ensure the Dunlop Series’ remain the key pathway to the Supercars Championship and we can now move forward with planning for the 2023 series.”

Leading Super2, Super3 Image Racing team owner Terry Wyhoon, who currently runs cars across both categories, told AUTO ACTION that for the long term it’s a good decision.

“While it doesn’t really work for me right now, I think they have made the right choice.

“There has been plenty of discussion around what we could run, but it’s the right decision for the long term viability of both categories.” Wyhoon confirmed.

“The ZB and Mustang are a fair way down the road as far as the aero package they run, so running against the current cars was always going to present problems.

“While I can’t afford to upgrade to a current Supercar, I will look to just run cars in Super3, however I am talking to Barry Ryan at Erebus with a view to trying to run a ZB next year.” Wyhoon told AUTO ACTION.

The decision means the vehicle eligibility for the 2023 Dunlop Series will officially be:

Dunlop Super2 Series

  • Car of the Future ZB Commodore
  • Car of the Future Ford Mustang

Dunlop Super3 Series

  • Car of the Future VF Commodore
  • Car of the Future FGX Falcon
  • Car of the Future Nissan Altima
  • Project Blueprint FG Falcon
  • Project Blueprint VE Commodore
  • Car of the Future Mercedes E63 AMG
  • Car of the Future Volvo S60

Both the Dunlop Super2 Series and Dunlop Super3 Series will continue to race as a combined field in 2023.

However it has been confirmed that the V8 Touring Cars, a series for older model Supercars will again return to a stand alone series.

This weekend sees a combined field of Dunlop Super2 and Dunlop Super3 Series cars and drivers returning to racing at the Sandown SuperSprint, where a record of 35 entrants will feature on the combined grid.

Declan Fraser, who will partner with Supercar legend Craig Lowndes in the Supercheap ‘Wildcard’ entry at this year’s Repco Bathurst 1000 currently leads the Dunlop Super2 Series standings.

Mount Gambier teenager Kai Allen leads the Dunlop Super3 standings.
