HERTA SNAPS INDYCAR QUALIFYING TREND

By Auto Action

Toronto overnight saw Young IndyCar star, and future Formula 1 hopeful, Colton Herta, become the first multiple pole position getter in this year’s series.

There were solid results for the two of the three Trans-Tasman drivers, with Kiwi Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing) taking second on the grid.

Fellow Kiwi and last week’s Ohio victor, Scott McLaughlin (Team Penske), came in at P6, putting both drivers in good stead for a circuit that has traditionally awarded the front qualifiers.

Australian veteran, past champion, and Chevrolet Penske team mate of McLaughlin, Will Powers, once again failed to fire in qualifying, finishing up in P16. he will need to repeat his Ohio heroics to fight his way from the back, on a track that’s difficult for overtaking.

“I should know that you must make it in the top every time because this can happen,” Said Power.

“It’s frustrating. Obviously this isn’t a great race to come from the back, and it’s unfortunate we are gonna go and have to do this again. It’s definitely a track that can create a lot of mayhem so who knows.”

Herta headed the pack in another tight qualifying, finishing 0.0894s ahead of Dixon.

American Chevrolet Penske driver Josef Newgarden took third, followed by Alexander Rossi and David Malukas.

In a season that see’s a tight table in the fight for the championship, it was a tough round of qualifying for some of the other hopefuls with Alex Palou starting at the very back, and Pato O’ward in P15 next to Power.

Current championship leader and Swede, Marcus Ericsson (Chip Ganassi Racing) also came in at P9.

But Toronto being Toronto, despite the few and difficult overtaking opportunities, is also known for causing havoc due to the cornering and tightness of the street track.

So don’t be surprised should you see the back of the pack being kept in with a genuine sniff.
