BIG NUMBERS FOR SYDNEY CLASSIC

By Garry O'Brien

There are over 200 entries slated to compete at the Historic Sports & Racing Association’s Sydney Classic at Sydney Motorsport Park on June 11-12.

The meeting will feature the Group C (1973-1884) and Group A (1985-1992) of the Heritage Touring Cars series along with the Australian 5 Litre Touring Cars series that morphed into the current Supercars.

The 30-car entry usually comprises Ford Sierras, BMWs, Nissans, Holden Commodores and Toranas, Ford Falcons, Jaguars, Mustangs and others that raced in the Australian Touring Car Championship and other races.

It will have for the first time, an ex-AMG-Mercedes 190E 2.5-16 Evo2 from the 1991 DTM season and raced by Jörg van Ommen and Frank Schmickler. The other ‘new’ car to the field is a rare Group C Valiant Charger built by New Zealander Doug Jack and raced against the stars of the ATCC in 1976 and 1977.

The Sydney Classic will contain a number of cars that have not been seen at the event previously

On the packed program there will be Group N Historic Touring cars that covered the period from 1958 to 1972, and a full contingent of Historic Sports and Racing Cars that take in all the years of a bygone era – from pre-WWII specials of the J, K and L groups to the wings and slick tyred Q & R cars.

Group S Production Sports Car will feature along with MG Racing Australia which is returning after participating at recent HSRCA meetings. The series has a huge range of race and sporting MGs, from the 5.6-litre MG B GT V8, complete with full aerodynamics, to works MG ZTs, a British Touring Car Championship MG ZS, the only factory MG SV-R in existence and others.

The HSRCA welcomes spectators to get up close to the cars, meet and chat to their drivers and custodians and get involved. While they enjoy the racing track side, the club encourages spectators to take a wander through the pits and paddock to enjoy the magnificent display of motorsport history – cars, merchandise, books, models etc.

Spectator tickets are available online by clicking the link to Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/2022-hsrca-sydney-classic-tickets-332524859807, or can purchase at the gate.
