Formula 2 drivers Enzo Fittipaldi and Theo Pourchaire have both escaped their nasty start line collision without serious injuries, the former recovering in hospital from a fractured heel in Saudi Arabia.

Pourchaire stalled from the start line at the beginning of the F2 Feature Race at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit and was subsequently ploughed into from behind by an unsuspected Fittipaldi, red flagging the race and sending both to hospital for an examination.

A couple of days later, both drivers provided an update on their condition.

“Hey guys, I am very grateful that I only broke my heel and have some cuts and bruises,” Fittipaldi, grandson of two-time Formula 1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi, wrote on Twitter.

“Thank you all for the messages, as well as the FIA and medical staff for taking great care of me.

“I am very happy that Theo is ok. I will be back on track soon and faster than ever.”

Fittipaldi’s brother Pietro also expressed his gratitude for the support Enzo has received.

“Thanks everyone for the messages,” Pietro posted on his Twitter account.

“Enzo is conscious and recovering in hospital.

“He suffered a broken right heel and is doing much better than we expected.

“We would like to thank the FIA, the team, all the doctors and professionals here in Saudi Arabia.”

Fittipaldi will almost certainly miss the final round of the season in Abu Dhabi, which will take place this weekend.

Pourchaire on the other hand may recover in time, the Frenchman expressing that he was faring well after the smash.

“Hey everyone, Just wanted to tell you that I’m globally fine,” Pourchaire posted on Twitter.

“For the moment I don’t know if it’s already the end of the season for me.

“But the most important is not that, that was a really big one and Enzo is injured.

“I wish him the best recovery possible.”

In assessing the incident, both Pourchaire and fellow F2 driver Jake Hughes believed an anti-stall system could have prevented the incident from occurring.

“This is not acceptable to not have an anti-stall. We could have avoided that,” Pourchaire said.

Hughes, who took part in rounds at Monza and Sochi Autodrom, also weighed in.

“Hoping Theo and Enzo are okay,” the Briton said.

“Think it’s about time we put anti-stall on these cars. I’m sure that crash could’ve been avoided with it.”

The F2 season finale will take place at Yas Marina Circuit from December 10-12, Aussie Oscar Piastri looking to wrap up the title.
