After appearing to be on the verge of heading towards IndyCar, American F3 racer Logan Sargeant has been signed by Williams Racing to join the team’s Driver Academy.

Sargeant had been scheduled to test with IndyCar squad AJ Foyt Racing at Barber Motorsports Park next week, the same test to that Nico Hulkenberg is due to sample IndyCar equipment for the first time.

However the American withdrew from the test and has since been announced as joining the iconic Formula 1’s team junior development program.

“I am delighted to be joining the Williams Racing Driver Academy.” said Sargeant.

“It’s a team with not only a fantastic history, but a great track record of bringing young talent into Formula One. I am really excited to begin working with the team and can’t wait to hit the ground running.”

The signing of the American driver brings Williams Racing closer ties with the US after the British team was taken over by American investment firm Dorilton Capital midway through last season.

“I am incredibly pleased to welcome Logan to the Williams Racing Driver Academy.” said Jost Capito, Williams Racing CEO.

“He’s demonstrated his talent in FIA Formula 3, consistently delivering strong results in an extremely competitive field. I’m proud that Williams will play a part in supporting the progression and growth of another talented young driver.”

Sargeant spent three seasons in FIA Formula 3 and finished third in the championship in 2020 when he was teammate to Australian Oscar Piastri.

The 20-year-old joins Roy Nissany, Jack Aitken and Jamie Chadwick in the Williams Racing Driver Academy. Dan Ticktum departed the program in August.
