APRIL DATE CONFIRMED FOR AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX
The Australian Grand Prix will take place in April 2022 following the official release of the Formula 1 World Championship calendar for next season.
As previously reported by Auto Action, the 2022 schedule will be made up of a record 23 races with the Melbourne event to move from its traditional season-opening slot to Round 3 next year.
“We are delighted to be returning to the iconic Albert Park early next year to bring Formula 1 to the fantastic Australian supports after two years away, and we can’t wait to be back.” said Stefano Domenicali, Formula 1 CEO.
“The fans in Melbourne will be among the first to see the brand-new car in action as we look forward to entering an exciting new era of Formula 1 in 2022.”
It’ll mark a return for Formula 1 action to the newly revised Albert Park street circuit, following the last-minute cancellation of the race in 2020.
“Now more than ever we need major international events, like the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, to not only help our economy recover but to put a spring back in our step.” said Andrew Westacott, AGPC CEO.
“The Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix is one of the world’s most sought-after events, for good reason. It’s not only a fantastic spectacle, it’s also a critical asset for Victoria’s visitor economy, ensuring our great state remains the undisputed home of major international events.”
“Australians are champing at the bit to once again attend international sporting events and we cannot wait to welcome fans through the gates at the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit in 2022.”
As part of the Albert Park redevelopment, seven corners on the circuit have been modified, with two removed completely, to create a new high-speed zone.
In addition, the circuit will have also been completely resurfaced for the first time since the race’s inception in 1995, creating a new challenge for Formula 1 teams when they return to Australia. One that McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo is looking forward to.
“It’s so good to be coming back to Melbourne, all us drivers have missed it and for me, it’s awesome to have a home race again.” said Ricciardo.
“The new Albert Park layout is something we’re all looking forward to in the new cars and racing in front of a home crowd after three years will be pretty special.”
The 2022 Formula 1 schedule remains largely unchanged from the provisional schedule revealed by Auto Action earlier this week. The fourth round of the series will take place at Imola with China missing out o a slot on the schedule again next year.
