SUPERCARS REVEAL FIRST SMP ROUND FORMAT

By Dan McCarthy

Supercars organisers have revealed the race format for the championship’s return at Sydney Motorsport Park next month.

The first of a quartet of rounds at Sydney Motorsport Park will be run from October 29-31 and consist of three 125km races, with the opener set to take place under lights.

The Eastern Creek venue will see Supercars roar back into life on Friday October 29 with two 30 minute practice sessions, the latter to run at night.

The single-compound tyre format will also remain in place, with five sets of softs tyres available to each car from the start of Saturday qualifying to the end of Sunday’s final race.

All three races will be run over 125km distance, with each requiring one compulsory pitstop with a minimum of two tyres to be changed.

Saturday’s action will see Supercars Championship competitors jump straight into Qualifying, before the Top 10 Shootout determines the pole sitter for the first night race of the season.

Although Supercars organisers have confirmed the race will run under lights at the Eastern Creek venue, however the track configuration is yet to be determined.

Sunday will see two 125km sprint races take place, with a single qualifying session setting the grid for each.

The support categories for the event are yet to be confirmed, however the Super2/3 Series, Toyota Gazoo Racing Series, TCR Australia, S5000 Championship, National Trans Am Series and Touring Car Masters all possibilities.

Further details of the event regarding TV coverage and circuit layouts are all to be announced in due course.

Fans will be welcome at all SMP events, with ticketing information to be provided in coming days.
