As predicted by AUTO ACTION earlier today, the 2021 Gold Coast 500 has been officially cancelled.

My GC and the Gold Coast Bulletin have both confirmed the news this afternoon, confirming that the event scheduled for December 3-5 will no longer take place.

This is the second year that the incredibly popular seaside circuit will not host a round of the Supercars Championship.

The Gold Coast round was scheduled to take place on the first weekend in December, but for multiple reasons will no longer take place.

The Bathurst 1000 is expected to be pushed back to the December 3-5 weekend to allow New South Wales COVID-19 restrictions to further ease once 80% of the New South Wales population becomes double vaccinated.

The other reasons for its cancellation are due to Queensland’s harsh border closures to people in Victoria and New South Wales, which currently will not allow anyone from these states to enter the sunshine state.

The final reason is that due to Queensland’s strict COVID-19 rules and slower than usual vaccination it is unlikely that a large crowd will be allowed to enter the event.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate expressed his disappointment of the event cancelation, due to the money that injects into the region.

“Devastating. That’s the only way to describe it,” the Mayor said to My GC.

“While I’m disappointed with the news, I support the supercars organisation as the risk in establishing this street circuit in these challenging times was too high.”

The major has pleaded that people all around the nation get vaccinated to allow the event to take place in 2022.

“My message to every motor racing fan … get vaccinated so we can get back on the track in 2022,” he concluded.
