Australian Jack Doohan qualified in fourth position for Sunday’s FIA Formula 3 Championship Feature Race at Zandvoort on Sunday, however his championship rival Dennis Hauger claimed pole position.

By taking pole position Hauger earned four points and sees him now move 29 points clear of Doohan in the championship.

It was a great rebound for Hauger after what was a frustrating round last weekend when he failed to qualify in the top 10.

Last night Doohan was up the pointy end of the timesheets all session long, but in the end qualified in fourth, failing to make any places on his final attempt.

In the final four minutes, a red flag was thrown due to American Hunter Yeany spinning at Turn 3. When the session resumed very few drivers improved on their times.

The championship leader Hauger was one of the improvers, pulling out a blinder on his final lap to pinch pole position.

The Norwegian Prema Racing driver took pole by 0.135s, from Trident youngster David Schumacher, who is the son of six-time race winner Ralf and nephew of seven-time champion Michael.

Schumacher’s championship contending teammate Doohan sat in third, however like Schumacher was demoted after the chequered flag fell.

It was Alpine academy driver Victor Martins that stole the position, out qualifying Doohan at the Dutch circuit by 0.054s, however both were over 0.3s slower than the pole man.

The third Trident driver Clement Novalak qualified in fifth ahead of MP Motorsport’s Caio Collet and practice pacesetter Jak Crawford.

Two-time race winner Alexander Smolyar qualified in eighth from Ayumu Iwasa and F1 star Charles Leclerc’s younger brother Arthur in 10th.

Logan Sargeant qualified in 11th ahead of Amaury Cordeel who will start from the opening inverted top 12 grid race in pole position.

Rafael Villagomez qualified in 13th missing out on a top 12 spot by 0.007s, while championship front-runner Frederik Vesti was a disappointing 14th.

The second Australian, Calan Williams driving for Jenzer Motorsport qualified in 21st ahead of his teammates Filip Urgan and Johnathan Hoggard in 22nd and 23rd respectively.

The opening race tonight can be seen at 6.35pm AEST on Fox Sports.
