By Dan McCarthy

The Motorsport Australia Australian Rally Championship has announced an expanded calendar for 2022.

The official schedule has been confirmed and will see an increase to seven rounds as the championship will visit all states and territories beside the Northern Territory.

It is hoped that the additional seventh round in Western Australia will support the strength and interest of the championship.

The 2022 season will commence with the National Capital Rally in Canberra, and will take place from March 26-27.

The second round sees the championship to Western Australia for the iconic Forest Rally on April 30-May 1.

From there competitors will head back across the width of Australia for the Les Walkden Rally in Launceston, Tasmania from June 25-26.

This will be followed by the popular Rally Queensland in Gympie t the end of July, this event made its debut in 2021 and proved popular with teams and drivers alike, and thus will return in 2022.

Teams then head south for the remainder of the calendar, with the Gippsland Rally in Victoria in late August and then the Adelaide Hills Rally on 15-16 October.

The location for the season finale in New South Wales is yet to be confirmed, however the event will take place from November 18-20.

Motorsport Australia’s Director of Motorsport & Commercial Operations Michael Smith said the expanded calendar highlighted the currently growing stature of the Championship.

“We’ve been impressed with the interest and growth in the Motorsport Australia Rally Championship in 2021, with competitive fields, big crowds and strong commercial interest in our events,” Smith said.

“With new cars, some familiar faces along with plenty of rising stars, the future of Australian rally is bright.

“We know 2021 has been a tough year for our calendar to date, but with increasing confidence about the ability to host events across the country in 2022, we’re excited to confirm a bigger and better calendar next year with seven rounds hosted between April and November.

“We were eager to confirm these dates as soon as possible to give everyone, including our state rally panels, time to plan for these events accordingly.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to our event organisers, competitors and commercial partners who have been fantastic during the past 24 months dealing with a lot of uncertainty and change.

“It’s been a tough period, but the events we have been able to deliver have been bigger and better than ever. We can’t wait to expand on that in 2022.”
