It was expected, but now it is official. The Singapore Grand Prix, scheduled for 3 October, has been not postponed but cancelled due to ongoing safety and logistic concerns brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We understand that our fans were looking forward to another edition of the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix. To cancel the event for a second year is an incredibly difficult decision, but a necessary one in light of the prevailing restrictions for live events in Singapore.” said Mr. Colin Syn, Deputy Chairman of Singapore GP Pte Ltd.

Given the evolving and unpredictable pandemic situation around the world, it has become increasingly challenging to stage a complex multi-faceted event for tens of thousands of local and overseas spectators.

“We would not be able to deliver a full event experience fans have come to expect over the years, while safeguarding the health and safety of our fans, contractors, volunteers and staff. Ultimately, we have to be responsible, cautious and prudent as safety is our number one concern,” said Syn.

This cancellation is expected to be the first of several more races dropping off the calendar as the events in Japan, Mexico and Brazil are in question.

Overall plans for the Australian Grand Prix have yet to be confirmed, and the official F1 website has yet to offer fans tickets for sale for the event.

Meanwhile, the United States Grand Prix will go ahead on 24 October as both the country and especially the state of Texas are opening up post-pandemic.

Sources tell AUTO ACTION that Bahrain, which hosted this year’s F1 season opener instead of Melbourne, will host one of the final F1 races this year. And several tracks in Europe are vying to take any other open dates.
