The voice of the Supercars Championship Neil Crompton has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The Victorian received the difficult news in mid-April in the lead up to the third round of the championship in Tasmania.

Since then Crompton has chosen to continue with his commentary duties across the nation despite the mental hardship.

Crompton will undergo surgery in coming weeks, but is expected to continue as the lead commentator at the next Supercars round at Winton Motor Raceway.

It is expected that after a short period of recuperation, the Supercars Hall of Famer will make a full recovery.

Supercars CEO Sean Seamer expressed his sadness about the news and expressed his support.

“Everyone at Supercars was saddened to hear this terrible news and we’re all thinking of Neil and his family at this difficult moment,” said Seamer.

“Neil has become more than just the voice of Supercars, he’s an integral member of the Commission and a friend to many in the paddock.

“He has our total support, and we wish him well over the coming weeks. You’ve got this Crompo.”

Likewise, Nathan Prendergast the General Manager of television and content voiced his thoughts and said the last two rounds have shown that Crompton is a true professional.

“The Supercars family is right behind Neil and we will be there for him in any way we can to help him through this difficult period,” Prendergast said.

“In recent weeks Neil has shown his professionalism and resilience by continuing to deliver in the broadcast since his diagnosis and will remain an essential part of the coverage for Winton and beyond.

“Neil has many close friends in the paddock and the broader Supercars community who wish him a speedy recovery and we look forward to having him back on our screens ASAP.”

Crompton’s TV broadcast career began 40 years ago when he started commentating motocross events for Network 10 before beginning to call Australian Touring Car Championship races

In 1985 the ATCC rights moved to Channel Seven and Crompton moved across with it alongside Mike Raymond & Garry Wilkinson.

On race day Crompton was often the pit reporter and remained in that role until his racing career took off.

During his career behind the wheel Crompton finished on the podium in the Bathurst 1000 twice and won the 1994 Bathurst 12 Hour.

Since 1996 Crompton has been an integral part of the Supercars Championship coverage across Channel 10, Channel Seven and most recently Fox Sports.

Auto Action wishes Crompton well in his recovery.
