The Tickford Racing driver has excelled all weekend and backed up the practice results with his first Bathurst 1000 pole position.

It was just reward for the Victorian based team that has been on the road away from home for 103 days.

Waters impressively took pole position by 0.4429s ahead of fellow Ford Mustang driver and champion Scott McLaughlin.

The #17 DJR Team Penske Mustang driven by McLaughlin ran very little rear wing but was unable to match Waters in any of the three sectors.

Walkinshaw Andretti United driver Chaz Mostert was the fastest Holden Commodore driver setting a time only 0.009s shy of McLaughlin to qualify third.

Brad Jones Racing driver Nick Percat was the first driver to set a time in the shootout and with a committed lap qualified on the outside of the second row in fourth.

The Triple Eight Racing drivers of Shane van Gisbergen and Jamie Whincup both made big mistakes at The Chase and has buried them in the top 10.

Van Gisbergen ran wide but remained on circuit, but it cost him dearly, he will start from fifth, 0.6882s off the pace after he was set for second position.

Whincup locked up into The Chase, ran across the grass and cost him 2s, the seven-time champion will start from 10th.

Lee Holdsworth could not convert provisional pole and will start from sixth ahead of Erebus Motorsport driver Anton de Pasquale, DJR Team Penske driver Fabian Coulthard and re-signed Tickford driver James Courtney who rounded out the top nine ahead of Whincup.
