The Matt Stone Racing Superlite entry shared between Jake Kostecki and Zane Goddard will start from the final slot on the grid after a qualifying incident left significant damage for the team to repair overnight.

Kostecki was pushing on a hot lap after winning the right to qualify the entry by topping a shootout out of the two drivers during practice five.

However, with 23-minutes remaining in the session, the MSR ZB Commodore suffered significant damage when Kostecki contacted the wall at The Esses.

“It was just around the last right hander,” Kostecki explained to Auto Action. “I thought I was actually fine, but it understeered, and because I understeered, I held on the brake and that is what made me lock up and hit the wall.”

As Kostecki caused the sole red flag of the session, his fastest time was deleted leaving a big day for he and rookie teammate Goddard on Sunday from 25th on the grid.

Kostecki believes that he could have qualified in the top half of the field had he made it to the end of the session running with a lighter fuel load.

“We are out here knowing the risks and we were traveling alright before that,” Kostecki said. “We were about 15th and I reckon we could have been in the middle of the pack. You obviously try a little bit harder, I tried too hard and made a mistake.”

The 20-year-old believes the damage looked worse on TV and for this reason he is sure the car will be back on track tomorrow morning.

“It looked a lot worse on TV to be honest the car is not too bad,” he felt. “Nothing major (is damaged) so we can get it fixed up and get back out there tomorrow.”
