Supercars teams are fleeing to New South Wales amid the impending Victorian border closure tonight.

The move comes after NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced the entire Melbourne metropolitan area as a hotspot. Also, as part of the announcement Premier Berejiklian confirmed that residents from Melbourne will be unable to enter NSW after midnight tonight.

Teams Tickford Racing, Erebus Motorsport, Walkinshaw Andretti United, Team18 and Kelly Racing as well as many drivers are preparing to cross the border and head straight to Sydney Motorsport Park where a ‘hub’ will be set-up for teams to prepare for Supercars July 18-19 event.

A decision has not been made on support categories as four Super2 teams are based within the state.

Following ongoing discussions with NSW and Victorian health authorities, all Victorian team personnel and drivers will relocate to Sydney Motorsport Park ahead of next weekend’s Truck Assist Sydney SuperSprint.

The team garages at Sydney Motorsport Park will be opened for use from this evening.

Supercars CEO Sean Seamer said: “Supercars has been closely monitoring the situation in Victoria and teams had been preparing to bring forward travel dates in advance of today’s announcement.

“We appreciate their willingness to play their part, to ensure we protect the health and wellbeing of Supercars and the wider community.

“We remain agile and continue to work with all government stakeholders, relevant medical officials and teams on ensuring we race in a safe and compliant way.”

Supercars is working with support categories on viable options for next weekend’s event. No decision has been made in that regard, with information to be released in due course.

Information regarding scheduling and ticketing for the Truck Assist Sydney SuperSprint will be released in coming days.
