After dominating the first round, Liam Lawson backed that performance up with a win in the feature race during the second round of the Castrol Toyota Racing Series at Teretonga Park.

After starting second on the grid, alongside Australian Jackson Walls, Lawson launched straight into the lead which he maintained for the 25 lap duration to claim the win.

The weekend didn’t go completely to plan for the Kiwi, however. Lawson started the opening race from 13th but managed to move his way up to 6th by the end. While in the reverse grid, he managed to maintain third place for the duration.

“We made a great start but we did have a clutch issue from the first race so we had to be careful,” said Lawson.

“It was nice until about halfway through the race when we had a moment where the power dropped, I was freaking out but it came back. We have no idea what the problem was but thankfully it sorted itself out.”

The mixed weekend left Lawson’s points advantage in the championship at 14 points over Igor Fraga who had a consistent weekend with two podium results. Grégoire Saucy sits third in the standings.

Seventeen-year-old French racer Emilien Denner took the win in the reverse grid race but failed to finish the feature after being taken out by Oliver Rasmussen in a botched passing attempted.

Brazil’s Caio Collet took out the opener after pulling off an impressive pass to jump from fourth to take the win.

The championship will be without its only female racer, Chelsea Herbert, for the remainder of the season after she injured her back at the start of Saturday morning qualifying.

The series now moves to New Zealand’s North Island for the third round at the Hampton Downs Motorsport Park, where the prestigious Denny Hulme Memorial Trophy will be contested.
