AMRS SYDNEY MOTORSPORT PARK WRAP
TWO CATEGORIES reached milestones at the fourth round of the Australian Motor Racing Series this weekend. At Sydney Motorsport Park, TA2 Muscle Cars and Mazda RX8 Cup had their biggest numbers to date but both saw one driver dominate.
TA2
OVER FOUR races, Aaron Seton (Ford Mustang) was never headed in TA2. He took out the opener ahead of George Miedecke (Mustang) and the other three from Nathan Herne (Dodge Challenger). The latter was third in race one and second for the round while Miedecke was third overall despite being jammed in fourth gear in the last and finishing seventh after two third places.
Hugh McAlister (Mustang) finished the round one point shy of the podium places and ahead of Ashley Jarvis (Chev Camaro), Michael Coulter (Mustang), Andrew Miedecke (Challenger), Murray Kent (Camaro), Matt MacKelden (Mustang) and Russell Wright (Mustang).
RX8 Cup
IT WAS a similar tale in RX8 Cup with Aaron Prosser taking out all the races, although the Kiwi did have to come through from third to win the first encounter. Brad Harris was leading Terry Lewis before having a big moment at turn 1. Lewis finished second and Harris third.
In the second outing, Lewis was again second while Matt Chick was able to get by Lachlan O’Hara. Harris had a fuse blow on the last lap, the result of contact with O’Hara and coasted to the line seventh. The third race was red flagged around half distance due to Lewis crashing at turn 1. In the last Prosser had to see off a big challenge from Chick who sustained a puncture at turn 5. That left O’Hara second from Will Harris.
GT-1
OUTRIGHT HONOURS in GT-1 Australia went to Nick Kelly who headed a trio of Audi R8 LMS’. Both the 48-minute enduros went 29 laps with pitstop times playing into the results. The first race was won by Vince Muriti (Audi) over Adam Hargraves (MARC II) with Kelly third and early pacesetter Matt Stoupas (Audi) fourth after having the longest pitstop. Best of the MARC 1s was Jake Camilleri who finished fifth ahead of John Morriss (Porsche GT3-R).
With less pit time in race two Kelly, who led before the stops, was able to resume in front towards the end to beat Geoff Taunton (MARC II). Morriss looked to have enough to hold off Stoupas, but a track rod failure at the final corner, saw Stoupas through to third and the Porsche limp across the line fourth. Behind fifth place Muriti, Jason Busk was the best of the MARC 1s, however the overall win in that class went to John Goodacre ahead of Bayley Hall and Tony Grove.
Formula 3
WITH THREE wins from the three races, John Magro continued his unbeaten run in Australian Formula 3. In each outing he easily accounted for Josh Buchan while third place laurels were split between Gerrit Ruff, Rielly Brook and Shane Wilson.
Mini Challenge
TWO RACE wins and a couple of useful minor placings gave John Walker (Mini Clubman) overall victory among the East Coast Mini Challenge. He won the weekend ahead of Iain McDougall (Cooper S JCW) and the similarly mounted Jim Campbell. Linda Devlin (JCW) posted two victories but contact with McDougall in race one relegated her down the order before recovering for third. A fuel issue forced her out of race three.
Stock Cars
OZTRUCKS DOMINATED the Stock Car ranks with former Legend driver James Burge (Chev Silverado) beating Brett Mitchell in his custom Commodore truck. Third place went to David Hender ahead of Corey Gurney in a pair of Pontiac Grand Prix’s while Danny Burgess and Robert Marchese vied for fifth and sixth in their OzTrucks.
Combined Categories
THE COMBINED categories of Group 4, Super Sixes, Utes and Production fielded a small grid. Overall it was Jaiden Maggs ahead of Commodore Ute team mates Glenn Hancox. Peter Dane (Ford Falcon XR6) won the first race before VCT issues ruled him out. Brent Edwards (XR6) won race three after his bonnet smashed the windscreen at the start of race one, and before he was turned around in the last.
